What is Harris Tweed®?

The Big Cloth

Harris Tweed® is a premium woven wool fabric also known as Clo Mor (or ‘The Big Cloth’ in Gaelic) and its the only fabric in the world governed by its own Act of Parliament. Harris Tweed® has a rare character and beauty with hundreds of distinctive patterns developed over centuries, all unique, but unmistakably Harris Tweed®.

Unusually, the wool is dyed before being spun, allowing a multitude of colors to be blended into the yarn, creating a cloth of great depth and complexity.

Harris Tweed® is a tweed which must, by law, be produced from yarn which is made from 100% pure new wool which has been dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland and woven by hand at homes of local islanders.
Only tweed that bears the Orb certification mark can be deemed to be genuine Harris Tweed® cloth.
